Our right and left EARS somewhat mirror each other and if placed side-by-side can be perceived to form the outline of a HEART.
The artist found it possible--while consciously avoid the too-literal anatomical trap--to create a semi-abstract rendering of both elements in a
composition representing
St. Benedict's mystical heart. The ear's outer rim expands toward the bottom edge to represent the lobe, while the bowl of the ear is hinted at by the shadow lines in red, in which rests the ChiRho in black. The ChiRho itself was a secret symbol used by the earliest Christians tostand for Chris
t.

 A BENEDICTINE SYMBOL
It is made up of the first two letters in Greek of Christ's name--the c (chi) and the r (rho)--and it is, as a Christian symbol, possibly older than the Cross. Placed at the entrance to the ear, at the center of the heart of the listening Benedictine, it is intended to serve as a reminder that he or she should pay attention to, reflect upon, measure, and act appropriately on any thoughts, ideas, desires, and inspirations coming through his or her heart's ears, ever guided by the life and teachings of
Our Saviour.
